   In recent years, political events have unfolded in a manner that is agonistic rather than consensualist, "Power" politicians have increasingly thrown down challenges in the face of "soft" liberalism. The internet is increasingly becoming an arena of unbridled manipulation of public communication. Does this mean that the consensus line in the social sciences is leading to a "dead end"? That it is nothing more than an expression of the complacency of the prosperous 1980s and 1990s? It is debatable whether deliberative democracy is a distinct type of democracy. But even those who answer this question in the negative still acknowledge that deliberative-consensualism is an inherent element of democracy. Is it then the case that the weakening of the deliberative element in today's democracies at the expense of the de-conciliatory element poses a risk to democracy itself?
