   The main subject of the study is the construction and depiction of urban space in the literary works of the British writers Ian McEwan and Martin Amis. The urban environment is not just a common setting in modern literature to which the authors in question belong. The construction of urban space is one of the main activities of the novel as a literary genre. Literature is clearly one of the fields in which "urban themes" unfold especially large and present, and this is especially strongly of the novel. Because of its abiding interest in the realistic depiction of everyday life, its attention to detail and its effort to build an artistic world distinguished by the fullness and character of its setting, the novel too often turns to urban space. The interest of this study is oriented not simply to novels whose plots take place in an urban setting, but rather to novels which to some extent can be said to be about the city, and the city is even in a sense their protagonist.
