In the 1930s the accelerated development of the army emerged as a clear priority for Bulgarian governments. Slowly but surely begins the rearmament and restoration of Bulgarian army in its former appearance. There is one important element for its combat training that is lacking — the large field exercises then called military maneuvers. Such big field exercises, for the first time after the Neuilly Treaty in Bulgaria, were made in 1937 near the town of Popovo, Northeast Bulgaria. All analysts at the time described them as a major socio-political event. Many museums and archives today keep the memory of these maneuvers. The presented catalog is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the maneuvers includes 62 unpublished photographs of the maneuvers donated to the Historical Museum — Popovo by Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (the last tsar of the Kingdom of Bulgaria between 1943 and 1946).
