Portraits from the Bulgarian Middle Ages: Clerics
Портрети от българското Средновековие. Духовници
Category: Medieval Bulgaria
Language: Bulgarian
The monastic institute was known in the Medieval Bulgaria even in the Paganist period due to its contacts with the largest Christian state in Eastern Europe - Byzantium, but it became visible and present after the conversion of the Bulgarians. The first monks who came from the empire to settle in the Bulgarian lands arrived with the Byzantine clergy with the establishment of the Bulgarian archdiocese. The data after 885, when the Cyril-Methodian disciples came to the country and through them the Slavic liturgy entered, are a prerequisite for the more widespread appearance of monks.
