     The Hebrew term Sepharad appears only once in the Bible, in Obadiah 20, and initially refers to Sardi, the capital of Lidya in Asia Minor. In Hebrew — as it was spoken in the Mediterranean, Sephardis means the Iberian Peninsula. In this sense, Sephardi are Jewish communities from the Peninsula or who came from the Peninsula before or after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Today, in the expanded meaning of the word and as a result of long-lasting cultural contacts and relative similarity in traditions, the Sephardi are called almost all of non-Ashkenazi Jews and especially Jews from the Maghreb and the East.
