The purpose of the book is to present the presidential institution during the mandates of Zhelyu Zhelev, its emergence and establishment in the Republic of Bulgaria and the constitutional position of the head of state. The contribution of Dr. Zhelev to the implementation of a peaceful transition from totalitarian state to building of democratic institutions is considered. President Zhelev's complex relationship with the executive branch has been revealed. In the field of foreign policy, the emphasis is on the recognition of the Republic of Macedonia. Тhe initial steps in Bulgaria's participation in NATO initiatives on the path to its full membership are shown too. Finally, attention is paid to the "primary elections", which lead to the end of Zhelev's political career. In a period when there is no socio-political consensus, the first democratically elected president makes the most of his powers to pursue a course towards NATO and integration into the European community.
