Between 2010 and 2012, rescue archaeological excavations were carried out in the centre of Sofia in relation to the construction of capital’s subway stations. An area of about 6000 square metres was investigated by a team from the National Archaeological Institute (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) under the author’s direction. Among the most important results were the data about Serdica’s initial development, to which the present study is dedicated.
