The first September 11: Chile 19731993
Първият 11 септември. Чили 1973—1993
Language: Bulgarian. Category: Cold War

September 11, 2001 became known as the date on which democracy was attacked. We have seen burning buildings and the deaths of thousands of innocent citizens. Western nations have united under US auspices to counter terrorism. This is not the first tragic September 11. In 1973, the Chilean army attacked the palace of the country's democratically elected president, Salvador Allende. The television shows a burning building, diving planes and killed citizens. The operation is supported by the United States. Under the ensuing military dictatorship, thousands of Chileans passed through torture centers, concentration camps, or disappeared without a trace. Gen. Augusto Pinochet declares that the goal of the military is to save their country from the totalitarian system of communism. The question remains: how far can we go to preserve democracy?
