Smyrna in Flames: The Fall of the Ottoman Metropolis in 1922 and the Consequences for Europe
Смирна в пламъци. Гибелта на Османската метрополия през 1922 г. и последствията за Европа
Language: Bulgarian
The publication is dedicated to the tragic fate of Smyrna (now Izmir) in September 1922, when one of the most flourishing and cosmopolitan cities of the Mediterranean was devastated by fire, war and fanaticism. The author recreates a moving, deeply human story unfolding in the last days of the Ottoman Empire. At the center are characters from different ethnicities, religions, and social classes-Greeks, Armenians, Turks, Levantines-all united in one thing: they are people who lose their homes, their pasts, and sometimes themselves, in the flames of history. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Smyrna was one of the richest and most multilingual cities of the Eastern Mediterranean. Called the "Pearl of the Aegean", it was a symbol of coexistence, cultural flourishing and commercial power. But when national ideologies clashed after World War I, the city became the scene of one of history's most chilling shipwrecks.
