   The authors examine the history of the Maritsa River valley coal mines (MARBAS — Maritsa Basin coil mines). The 120-year history of coal mining is full of various episodes and events. A lot of archival materials about the mining activity have been studied. General information about the mines and the characteristic features of their technological scheme are given. The production and technological results of the mining activity are described. The development of the mines and the peculiarities of their work were traced. A brief description of the life of the miners and their families during different periods of time is given. The emergence of new mines after the Second World War, their development and extinction is described. The peculiarities of mine management and the various auxiliary divisions and units are noted. Problems related to technical progress in mining enterprises, innovative activity in them, national records, labor productivity and their economic indicators are noted. The unpleasant procedure for the technical liquidation of the mines is also described.
